Yuri
by Fabrice Melquiot, translated by Daf James
co-produced with Chapter Arts Centre
Patrick and Adele can't have children and then Yuri appears. But who is Yuri? Why is he here? Is he dangerous? Is he Russian? Should we love him? A play about infertility, Scrabble, supermarkets, sex, the state of the planet, national identity, racism and the absurdity of wanting to bring children into our deranged world. It's also about love and the Volga, enormous, beautiful and unmanageable.
“It just makes a Welsh couple look like darn fools, preying on a vulnerable boy.” The Sprout
“A rare instance of a French play premièring in both English and Welsh in Cardiff, Yuri is equally unusual in being a meditation on the metaphysics of identity which also contains jokes about willies. This is comedy at its most entertainingly confusing.” British Theatre Guide
